Leather Shoes Cracking?

Here’s How to Care for Them Properly

Many people notice that leather shoes tend to crack if left unused for a long time. They may also become stiff and lifeless. Since leather is a natural material, lack of regular care causes it to lose its natural oils and moisture, leading to cracks over time.

Why Leather Shoes Crack?

Leather contains natural oils that keep it flexible. When shoes are not worn for long periods, these oils dry out. Extremely dry or overly humid environments can also damage leather. Dust buildup weakens the surface, making cracks more likely.

How to Take Proper Care-

Keep Them Clean
Always clean leather shoes before storing them. Use a soft cloth to remove dust. A slightly damp cloth may be used if necessary, but ensure the shoes are completely dry before storage.

Condition Regularly
Apply a leather conditioner or good-quality shoe polish at least once a month. This restores lost oils and helps maintain flexibility.

Store Them Correctly
Avoid storing leather shoes in plastic bags, as this blocks airflow. Use fabric shoe bags instead and insert shoe trees or paper to maintain shape.

Control Moisture
Excess humidity can cause fungus, while very dry conditions can lead to cracks. Placing silica gel or dried neem leaves near stored shoes helps regulate moisture.

Air Them Occasionally
Even if unused, take your shoes out once a month and place them in a well-ventilated area with mild sunlight. Avoid harsh direct sun, which can harden the leather.
