Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Jamshed Alam on Monday accepted the charge sheets in two cases and issued arrest warrants against the accused. The court set February 15 as the date for submitting reports on the execution of the arrest warrants.
In connection with the shooting deaths of cargo truck driver Md. Hossain and CNG-run auto-rickshaw driver Sabuj during the July mass uprising in Mohammadpur, Dhaka, the court has issued arrest warrants against 41 people, including ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
On Monday, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Jamshed Alam took cognizance of the charge sheets in the two cases and issued the arrest warrants. February 15 has been fixed for submission of the warrant execution reports.
Other notable accused against whom arrest warrants have been issued include former Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader, former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, former Foreign Minister Hasan Mahmud, former minister Jahangir Kabir Nanak, former Member of Parliament Sadeq Khan, and banned organization Chhatra League’s President Saddam Hossain and General Secretary Sheikh Wali Asif Inan.
The matter was confirmed by Sub-Inspector Mizanur Rahman of the General Registration Branch of the Mohammadpur police station court.
Hossain murder:
During the mass uprising, on July 19, 2024, Hossain was shot in Mohammadpur and later died. Two others, named Sazzad and Shahin, were injured. Following Hossain’s death, his mother, Mosa. Rina Begum, filed a murder case on August 31, 2024, naming Sheikh Hasina and 16 others as accused. After investigation, Mohammadpur police station Sub-Inspector Md. Akramuzzaman submitted a charge sheet on November 23 last year, accusing Sheikh Hasina and 34 others. In this case, 20 accused, including Sheikh Hasina and Obaidul Quader, are absconding.
Sabuj murder:
During the mass uprising, on August 4, 2024, 22-year-old Sabuj was shot in front of Mayur Villa in Mohammadpur. He died at around 11:30 pm while undergoing treatment at a hospital. In this incident, Sabuj’s brother Monir Hossain filed a case at Mohammadpur police station on September 1 last year, naming 98 individuals and accusing an additional 450–500 unidentified persons. Following the investigation, Mohammadpur police station Sub-Inspector Md. Mazharul Islam submitted a charge sheet on November 27 last year against 30 people, including Sheikh Hasina. In this case as well, 21 accused, including Sheikh Hasina and Obaidul Quader, remain absconding.
