Why a ‘Yes’ Vote Matters: Ali Riaz Frames Referendum as a Turning Point for Bangladesh

Professor Ali Riaz, Special Assistant to the Chief Adviser, has described the upcoming referendum as a defining moment for Bangladesh’s future, stressing that a ‘Yes’ vote is essential to establish equal citizenship for all.

He said the July National Charter is not based on religious identity but on guaranteeing equal rights to every citizen, regardless of faith, language, culture, or geography. The charter proposes constitutional recognition of Bangladesh as a multi-ethnic, multi-religious, and multilingual nation.

Riaz warned that without judicial independence, political participation, and voting rights, the country risks sliding back into authoritarianism. “Democracy is not just about casting a vote—it is about protecting the rights of every citizen,” he said.

According to him, the referendum gives citizens a clear choice: maintain an unequal structure or move toward a rights-based, inclusive, and just state. He urged voters to support the July National Charter by voting ‘Yes’.
