Bangladesh’s women’s cricket team has taken a significant step towards the main stage of the T20 World Cup by defeating Thailand by 39 runs in the qualifiers. The crucial match was held on Wednesday (28 January) at Mulpani, Nepal, where Nigar Sultana Jyoti’s side dominated the Thai team.
With this victory, securing a World Cup spot is now only a matter of time for Bangladesh. Winning any of the remaining two matches will guarantee their direct entry into the main tournament. Even if a match is abandoned due to rain and they earn a point, Bangladesh will still secure a World Cup berth.
Bangladesh faced an early setback after losing the toss and being sent in to bat. Opener Dilara Akter was dismissed for a duck on the very first ball, while fellow opener Sharmin Akter scored only 11 before getting out. However, the team recovered strongly with a 110-run partnership for the third wicket between Juwairiya Ferdous and Shabana Mostari, putting Bangladesh in a commanding position.
Relying on this partnership, Bangladesh posted a challenging total of 165 for 8 in their allotted 20 overs. Juwairiya played a fiery 56 off 43 balls, including 3 fours and 4 sixes, while Shabana contributed 59 off 42 balls, hitting 9 fours and 1 six.
Towards the end of the innings, captain Nigar Sultana Jyoti (6) and Swarna Akter (4) could not add much, but Ritumnni played a crucial cameo of 15 runs off just 6 balls. Rabeya Khan scored 5, and Fahima Khatun contributed 1 run.
Chasing 166, Thailand managed 126 for 8 in their 20 overs. Thai opener Nathakan Chanthum top-scored with 44, while Naruyemol Chaihai and Nannapat Koncharoenka scored 30 and 29 respectively. However, no other Thai batter could reach double figures against Bangladesh’s controlled bowling.
Among Bangladesh’s bowlers, Marufa Islam was the most successful, taking 3 wickets. All-rounders Ritumnni and Swarna Akter took 2 wickets each, while experienced Fahima Khatun picked up 1 wicket, dismantling Thailand’s batting lineup.
With this dominant performance, Bangladesh now sits in a favorable position on the points table. Cricket fans across the country are eagerly looking forward to the team’s upcoming matches. If this momentum continues, the team is expected to achieve its goal of qualifying for the main World Cup tournament with ease.
