Local Government Polls to Begin with Three Major City Corporations

The Bangladesh Election Commission is set to begin the local government election process with polls in three major city corporations — Dhaka North City Corporation, Dhaka South City Corporation and Chattogram City Corporation. The Local Government Division has already sent an official letter to the Commission in this regard.

According to EC sources, once elections in these three cities are completed, the remaining nine city corporations, along with district councils, municipalities and upazila parishads, will go to the polls in phases. Most local government bodies are currently being run by administrators following the removal of elected representatives after the political transition in August 2024.

Officials said preparations will include updating voter lists, finalizing constituency boundaries, scrutinizing candidates and appointing election officials. Given the limited time before the expiry of Chattogram City Corporation’s tenure, the EC may adopt a special urgent plan to ensure timely polls.
