Major (Retd.) Hafiz Uddin Ahmed, Minister for Liberation War Affairs, has been elected Speaker of the 13th National Parliament.
The election took place during the first session of the newly formed parliament on Thursday.
A decorated freedom fighter and veteran politician, Hafiz Uddin Ahmed is a senior leader of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP). He was awarded the gallantry title “Bir Bikrom” for his role in the 1971 Liberation War.
Over the years, he has held several key positions in government. He previously served as Minister of Jute and Minister of Water Resources. Currently, he is serving as the Minister for Liberation War Affairs.
At 81, Hafiz Uddin Ahmed has been elected to parliament for the seventh time, reflecting his long-standing presence in national politics.
Political analysts say his extensive experience in both politics and administration is expected to help ensure smooth parliamentary proceedings.
The election of the Speaker marks a significant step in the formal functioning of the 13th National Parliament as it begins its legislative activities.
