In a historic move to transform sports into a viable profession, the government of Bangladesh has officially brought national athletes under a structured salary framework. Prime Minister Tarique Rahman inaugurated the sports allowance distribution program on Monday (March 30) morning at his office in Tejgaon, marking the first time in the country’s history that athletes will receive regular monthly remuneration.

During the launch, 129 athletes were presented with special 'Sports Cards,' which will facilitate the disbursement of their salaries, honors, and incentives. The Prime Minister stated that this is only the first phase, with a strategic goal to eventually include 500 athletes under this payroll. The initiative aims to provide financial security to sportspersons, allowing them to focus entirely on their performance and international representation.

The scheme, however, is strictly merit-based. A performance evaluation will be conducted every four months to ensure accountability and maintain high standards. Athletes who sustain their performance levels will continue to enjoy the benefits, while those failing to meet the criteria may be removed from the list to make way for emerging talents.

"Our objective is to elevate sports from a passion to a sustainable livelihood," government officials remarked during the ceremony. While it has been confirmed that all selected athletes will receive an equal salary, the specific monetary amount has not yet been disclosed. Prime Minister Tarique Rahman is expected to formally announce the final salary figures in the coming days.

Sports analysts believe that this institutional support will encourage young talents from across the nation to pursue sports as a career, potentially increasing Bangladesh's medal prospects in global competitions such as the Olympics and Asian Games.
