Nahid Islam, convener of the National Citizen Party (NCP) and opposition chief whip, on Saturday alleged that the interim government had “engineered the process,” handed over power to the BNP, and then stepped away, expressing concern over the country’s current situation.

“We are concerned about the country’s situation. The interim government engineered the process, handed over power to the BNP, and left. Now the party is moving to cancel key ordinances,” Nahid said.

He also called on former interim government chief adviser Dr Muhammad Yunus to take to the field over the reform issue.

“On the question of reforms, we call on Dr Yunus to also take to the field. The advisers of his government must also speak out,” he said.

Addressing reporters, Nahid further criticized the BNP’s stance, saying, “Even after securing two-thirds of the seats, the people are not with the BNP, as it has taken a position against reforms.”

“The chief adviser of the interim government and other advisers cannot simply return to their professions—this will not happen. You will also have to stand in the dock of the people,” he added.

He said the interim government had failed to meet expectations.

“We installed the interim government on the blood of the people. They have disappointed us. To preserve whatever has been achieved, they must also take to the field,” Nahid said.

He made the remarks while responding to questions from journalists after arriving at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka on Saturday afternoon, following the completion of holy Umrah in Saudi Arabia.

He was received at the airport by the party’s joint convener Ariful Islam Adib and other central leaders.

Earlier, Nahid left Dhaka for Saudi Arabia with his wife on a Saudi Airlines flight at 3:19am on Sunday, March 29.
