26 Bangladeshis return after serving 3-year jail in India

Twenty-six Bangladeshi citizens who had been sentenced to three years in prison for intrusion into India returned home through the Benapole check post on Tuesday night.

The group comprised seven women, eight children, and eleven men, according to Benapole Port Police Station’s Officer-in-charge (OC) Russel Mia.

At around 10:30 pm, the Petrapole Immigration Police of India handed over the returnees to the Benapole Immigration Police.

The transfer was facilitated through a special travel permit issued by the Indian government, the OC confirmed.

Officials from the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) and India’s Border Security Force (BSF), as well as customs, police, and intelligence agencies from both nations, were present during the handover process.

After completing all necessary formalities, the returnees were officially handed over to the Benapole Port Police Station on Wednesday morning.

The individuals are from various districts across Bangladesh, including Thakurgaon, Chapainawabganj, Pirojpur, Gopalganj, Tangail, Kurigram, and NarailNo marked increase in interception of undocumented Bangladeshis along the border after regime change, data shows.
