July Charter to Be Finalized Soon

Dr Ali Riaz, Vice Chairman of the National Consensus Commission, has announced that the July Charter will be finalised shortly.

He made the statement on Sunday (April 27) around 10:30 am during a meeting with Ganosamhati Andolon at the LD Hall of the Parliament Building.

At the outset of the meeting, Ali Riaz stated that the Reform Commission has already submitted its report to address the country's accumulated crises. He emphasised the need to preserve the unity that led to the fall of authoritarianism, highlighting its critical role in shaping the future.

"This effort is for the next generation and for building a new Bangladesh," he said, expressing optimism that political parties would continue to extend their cooperation.

Riaz further added that the sacrifices made by those who gave their lives, fought, or were injured during the July Movement against fascism as well as those who, over the past 16 years, resisted various forms of oppression and, over the past 53 years, strived to establish a democratic, accountable, and inclusive state, must not be forgotten. "We owe them a debt of gratitude," he said.

Commenting on the progress of the ongoing dialogue on reforms, Riaz noted that although some advances have been made, it is crucial to sustain and build on this momentum. "If we fail to preserve and expand this progress, we risk losing all opportunities. Therefore, a collective effort is essential," he warned.

He stressed, "We are striving together for achievements that will not only benefit us but also the next generation, paving the way for a new, democratic, and accountable Bangladesh."

During the meeting, Zonayed Saki, Chief Coordinator of Ganosamhati Andolon, stated that the points of consensus among stakeholders would form the basis of the July Charter. Issues where disagreements persist will be presented to the public for broader consultation.

Saki also remarked that Bangladesh would move forward on the path of democratic transformation through consensus.

Earlier, during the first phase of dialogue with political parties, the Consensus Commission held meetings with BNP, Jamaat-e-Islami, NCP, and other parties. Following the meeting with Ganosamhati Andolon, the Commission is scheduled to hold discussions with the Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (JSD) later in the afternoon.
