A Dhaka court today (June 26) placed former Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Kazi Habibul Awal on a three-day remand in a case filed over alleged irregularities and bias during the 12th national election.

Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Mohammad Mostafa Zaman passed the order after police sought a 10-day remand. Awal was arrested by Detective Branch (DB) police from Moghbazar on Wednesday.

The case, filed by the BNP, accuses 24 individuals—including former CECs and election officials—of misconduct in the 10th, 11th, and 12th parliamentary elections.

Earlier, former CEC KM Nurul Huda was also detained from his Uttara residence.

The arrests follow Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus’s directive to investigate the roles of election officials in the past three national polls.
