BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has thanked Chief Advisor Dr. Muhammad Yunus for his instructions to complete election preparations by December this year.

He was speaking at a discussion meeting organized by Bangladesh Federal Union of Journalists (BFUJ) and Dhaka Union of Journalists (DUJ) at the National Press Club on Thursday (July 10).

Mirza Fakhrul said, “I would like to thank Dr. Yunus for his instructions regarding election preparations. This is a very positive initiative. We want the upcoming elections to be free, impartial and acceptable to all.”

Speaking on border killings, he said, “Border killings are not something to be taken lightly. In this situation, the interim government should give importance.”

Regarding the possible imposition of 35 percent tariff by the United States Fakhrul said,“Such tariff imposition can put the garment industry in a bad situation. This will create a big crisis for the country's economy. The government must take serious steps in this regard.”

At the event, BNP Standing Committee member Dr. AZM Zahid Hossain said, “Although the dictatorship has gone, its mentality still remains in the society. Some of the young leaders are saying - 'If this is not the case, then that will not happen'. This attitude and dictatorial behavior are all the same. Journalists are being threatened by posting on Facebook - this language is not acceptable for a democratic society.”
