The campaign for the Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU) and hall council elections formally began on Tuesday (26 August). The Election Commission announced a three-tier security arrangement for the polls, with army deployment included in the plan.

The campaign was inaugurated at a meeting held at the Nabab Nawab Ali Chowdhury Senate Bhaban around 11:30 am, where Chief Returning Officer Professor Dr Mohammad Jasim Uddin shared the details.

“Dhaka University has repeatedly played a leading role during national crises. Through the DUCSU elections, it is also possible to set a democratic example,” he said. He added that a three-layered security system has been arranged for the polls.

Meanwhile, Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Sheikh Md Sajjad Ali said overall campus security would be ensured in coordination with the Election Commission.

According to EC directives, no outsiders will be allowed into university residential halls seven days before the election. On September 8 and 9, train operations at the Dhaka University metro rail station will remain suspended. Entry to the campus will be restricted to students with valid ID cards only.

Issuing a warning to candidates, the Returning Officer said election campaigns must not disrupt the academic environment. Any derogatory remarks against the Liberation War, the Father of the Nation, martyrs, or the country’s sovereignty would not be tolerated.

The Chief Election Commissioner further stated that if any attack is carried out on the basis of gender, religion, ethnicity, or other identities, the candidate would not only lose candidacy but also their student status and residential seat. He warned that online hate speech or harassment would result in immediate legal action.

Dr Jasim Uddin noted that the participation of 40,000 conscious students would ensure the success of the election. “The nation is now looking toward Dhaka University. I hope the DUCSU election will become a milestone in the democratic culture not only of the university but also of the entire country,” he added.
